Saturday 25th June saw the Swim Northwest Open Water Festival 2016 at the Helly Hansen Water Sports Centre in Salford Quays. The weather started off beautifully sunny but in true mancunian fashion the heavens opened almost as soon as the first race was underway. Well over 100 competitors from clubs throughout the Northwest and Northeast regions, and a couple from further afield, came to compete in the Championships but COMAST were the only club to have representatives in each of the 5 events.
Alana Hedges swam a storming 5km race to win the event in 1:02.21, beating her nearest rival by just 0.01 of a second. Alex Axford from Performance squad came 7th overall in the 3km race. Ethan Nevett and Reece Corfield from Junior Performance raced in the 1.5km events and swimmers from Competitive and Junior Development squads tried their hand at open water swimming for the first time in the 500m, very bravely without wetsuits!
