Rising Stars

21st November 2016: Hough End win the Rising Stars Trophy for the first time.

After a hat-trick of wins for Harpurhey SC, Hough End lifted the title of top club in the City of Manchester for the first time, by winning the latest Rising Stars gala on Saturday 12th November.

Just 5 points separated the teams in favour of Harpurhey at the September gala, but Hough End turned the tables this time with a small 4 point victory of 292 to 288. Although Harpurhey picked up slightly more medals, the overall team points score is calculated on swims down to fifth place.

Hough End completed a great night by retaining the mixed 50m Freestyle Relay trophy, thanks to their team of Rueben Crabbe, Ambar Boughton, Dominic Seymour and Rosa Hollingsworth.  The COMAST Academy team finished second with Harpurhey in third place.

As always, the event took place at the Manchester Aquatic Centre with a near record attendance of123 swimmers from the Manchester Community Clubs of Broadway, Harpurhey, Raven Moss, Wythenshawe, City of Manchester Icebergs, COMAST Hough End and the COMAST Academy.

The gala gives young swimmers a chance to participate in a competitive environment, often for the first time. The swimmers raced in the 50m events of Freestyle, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Backstroke and 4x50m Freestyle team relays. For the first time this year the event was held in the 50m pool rather than the usual 25m with the very young swimmers adapting well to the change.

The event is organised and officiated by volunteers from the City of Manchester Aquatics Swim Team, with swimmers from their senior squads providing the timekeeping and assisting with marshaling.

To round off the evening the Top Club and Relay trophies were presented by Paralympic double gold medalist Hannah Russell. Hannah is a member of the senior squad at COMAST and trains on a daily basis at the Aquatic Centre. Hannah kindly brought along her Rio medals to show the swimmers and answered any questions they had.
